% H7 n8 v% M" Q% }( w; D$ r  out by the grasses# X& y' I3 E, O
  Sweeping triumphant across it, it wound between hedges of roses, K3 s& Y; o/ s) S: S* y7 G
  Whose blossoms were poised above leaves as pond lilies float on8 ~& B2 X* {2 }# j: d8 u. l! l  }
  the water,
) |6 u* }9 b* x# v4 q/ ^  While hidden by bloom in a hawthorn a bird filled the morning with
% n1 z7 n% a* ]) Q! C2 i3 O  singing.+ e# f, t$ w! @
  It widened a highway, majestic, stretching ever
6 k7 T/ R" }) v, a* ]  to distant horizons,
% {" x, w% {8 r7 t" _9 K  Where shadows of tree-branches wavered, vague outlines invaded by
) N, x/ Q$ w) }6 v  sunshine;3 m% X6 _# [# j
  No sound but the wind as it whispered the secrets of earth to the
9 B7 F3 |6 j. P+ K% h* t0 ~  flowers,
9 N. l# j! B7 u  And the hum of the yellow bees, honey-laden and dusty with pollen.
  B9 {' S) T, z$ I9 Z! ?- X  And Summer said, "Come, follow onward, with no thought save the! g% N3 W4 m; q+ E
  longing: G9 @6 t7 A, m0 I
  to wander,, H4 t3 O5 h. |5 I- e* L* A2 J
  The wind, and the bees, and the flowers, all singing the great song
6 G4 D! _; }% Y+ y# C# ^; @  of Nature,4 d" U7 _: d7 K& p) M
  Are minstrels of change and of promise, they herald the joy of the
2 Y% F3 G- b" o/ g8 }+ e3 E: T  Future."
1 |4 m" k  H6 o8 Q6 k4 N8 R4 k9 I  Later the solitude vanished, confused and distracted# W& M: G2 |# E; g
  the road# W1 t# B0 x, B7 u
  Where many were seeking and jostling. Left behind were
  D2 {' B8 D6 \  the trees
* c9 z. u7 |  r9 l( e  and the flowers,
) f: Q! d/ E- @+ z/ S0 x  The half-realized beauty of quiet, the sacred unconscious communing.
/ j/ p6 K8 P- |8 T: N5 n! f  And now he is come to a river, a line of gray, sullen water,
; }' _$ n: h+ b. ?0 w! M( S/ ]3 ~* H  Not blue and splashing, but dark, rolling somberly on to the ocean.
; a  U  M/ ^- b, X7 O: D* U: U  But on the far side is a city whose windows flame gold in the sunset.
& y# e9 G! t% e' r% Q+ E3 D/ I  It lies fair and shining before him, a gem set betwixt sky and water,8 M8 z, v9 M( G
  And spanning the river a bridge, frail promise to longing desire,
  H- [, |, \* ^1 ^: w  Flung by man in his infinite courage, across the stern force of
$ V- l$ X' ]2 y" H4 |5 N9 s  the water;8 v6 T- h! R! K" ]- q% E; a8 b0 r
  And he looks at the river and fears, the bridge is so slight,2 E! h( q% ]' M( I7 z6 D
  yet he ventures" f* s4 J# @& N% P# V0 U
  His life to its fragile keeping, if it fails the waves will engulf0 j7 z+ _) j4 Q9 ~
  him.
8 o3 H: S; k% J% _7 ~  O Arches! be strong to uphold him, and bear him across to the city,# N3 d2 d, k3 R) v' u
  The beautiful city whose spires still glow with the fires of sunset!
